Although the premise is anecdotal, I mostly agree.
I think focus groups are BS, and I think that A/B testing is a route to the mundane.
IMHO, it's a mistake to think that preferences of characteritics in aggregate culminate in the interest for a product, or line of products as a whole. Consumption isn't just simple preference. it's also a series of experiences and part of an overall story. If you have no voice, why the hell are you charging people to listen?
One thing about an Apple product, is that you knew "Steve Jobs thinks this is worth selling", not simply "Steve Jobs thinks this will make money". Even though I don't use a mac, it was enough to make me walk into the Apple store everytime I went by, and probably the reason why my wife has a mac.
