That kind of question likely is highly dependent on the kind of work a user is doing. Most languages are suited for a certain niche. Although there are general-purpose programming languages, sometimes you want a scripting language, but sometimes scripting languages don't have the power you need, etc.

to actually answer question (sorry if you feel it wasn't really answered), I've found JavaScript to be the most useful for me, as my focus is on web apps. But note, it can also be used for desktop apps via appjs.org, and can be used for mobile apps via apache cordova.
