I've always been drawn to these types of atmospheric paintings. Thanks for this one. I looked into Turner some more. It's interesting to see the evolution of his work. This was one of his first displayed paintings:

Fishermen at Sea - 1796

This is around the time of Flint Castle:

The Burning of the Houses of Parliament - 1835

This was near the end of his career:

Sunrise with Sea Monsters - 1845

They all have the same quality of being dominated by the lighting, but it seems that he distilled it more and more as time went on. I think I prefer the midpoint in his career the most. (btw, I added a date to your post.)

I kind of remembered his paintings to be at the same time realistic and full of light. When looking for the right example to show I couldn't find something matching this idea, except maybe the Flint Castle. The Burning Parliament is good too!
