Can an author or owner dissolve the copyright of a work?
In theory, the copyright owner can donate a work to the public domain. In practice, however, because everything is assumed to be copyrighted, you'd have problems demonstrating that something recent actually is in the public domain. The free software movement tried to get around this by creating a "copyleft" license, which retains the copyright, but insists that users share it as if it didn't have one.
