I'll ping in on a recommendation for Fantasy Grounds. We use it weekly; I think the group each has about $100 for all the DLC etc we use. Great stuff, helps the DM build a scenario and it also works well with RollD20 if you are into that.
I think I like Fantasy Grounds better than Roll20, but the learning curve is steeper and the tutorials worse. It's worth mentioning that only the GM actually needs to buy things. Other players can use the demo version of Fantasy Grounds, and the GM can even share any books they've bought with the players.
