Cars are kind of a necessity in the US. Like what mk said, if you live near a city, more often than not a lot of jobs average to about fifteen miles away, with no bus access near your house, cause living on the outskirts is cheaper than city living, unless you're willing to get shot. If you live in rural places in states like Ohio, Wisconsin, Lousiana, etc., cities are few and far between, so you need a car or know someone with a car and the same schedule as you to get anywhere. The catch is, when you work two part time jobs, your schedule is constantly changing, so you pretty much need a car of your own, whether you want one or not. More often than not, no car means no job. Seriously. When you go to job interviews, you'll constantly be asked "Do you have reliable transportation?"
