So the progressive metal band, Protest the Hero, has partnered with Bandcamp.com in undertaking the release of 6 songs over 6 months. Anybody who pays for the subscription will get each song on the 15th day of each month, along with other miscellaneous things. What do you think of this model? How could it affect the music industry?
I think this is an interesting alternative to the way most bands do things, but in order to actually take advantage of it you'd have to have an established fan base. It'd be a major turnoff to new listeners to have to invest in a subscription, even though this one is super affordable. Combining this idea with regular streaming services could be a great platform though! I help support a few artists through Patreon, so doing something similar for musicians is a step towards reworking the industry into one that actually supports the musicians.
