The main points of The River are in this documentary.

It is a very long, sad, book to try and slug through. Most of it has been debunked or swept under the rug. Too much effort to put into something that might be wrong. Confessions of an Economic Hitman is the best, and most legitimate.
Have a Nice Doomsday is a great look at why Americans would rather end the world, than cut back consumption.

John Perkins' book also has a great pace, and some exciting sleuth like elements. It is one of the easier books to get my friends into.
