What's the reasoning behind blocking comments instead of hiding them? In other words, why not make block (and mute) work like filter?

It's a tough one, and there is no perfect solution for all scenarios. One issue with only hiding, is that it isn't hidden for others, and thus others will likely respond to the caustic reply, and the cycle continues.

Personally, if someone blocked me, I'd still like to see the conversations going on, even if I'm unable to respond. Being blocked and muted are hard enough shutouts as it is. Why make it worse?

Edit: At the same time, if I block someone and see over time that their behavior is changed, I'd be very willing to unblock them. If I can't read their posts, how will I ever know that that's happened?

Fair point. I guess there is no perfect system. My problem with blocking is it goes beyond "personal moderation" when I can now control the experience of others on the site. If it were just me hiding someone's comments from myself it doesn't affect anyone else.

True. It's a hell of a double edged sword.
