We need to reorient the discussion of climate change away from the idea that we're destroying the Earth, because we're not. The Earth and the natural world will survive humanity, it's humans that won't survive. We'll destroy ourselves as well as some portion of animal life, but we will just be a small blip in the timeline of billions of years. It will only require one hundred thousand years or so for all traces of human kind to disappear after we've destroyed ourselves, but the Earth will have hardly noticed our existence.

That's a good point. George Carlin said it that way. "The planet is fine. The people are fucked."

That is exactly what I was thinking of when I wrote my comment. The human race as an "evolutionary culdesac" is my favorite line from that bit.

I think it's a little sad. I wish Nature could learn from its mistakes. I mean really learn. I wish Natural Selection could realize, "oh, these animals are becoming a little too human. I shouldn't let that happen."

It kind of begs the question really, what Earth destroying species will come next?

But about what you said - you really couldn't be more correct. Humans are simply ants meandering their way across the driveway while the Universe is driving the car, carrying out its daily routine.
