I think this is purely a matter of personal perception. A woman might treat her pets as if they were her babies, but not be able to look at intellectually disabled people as fellow humans. A man missing his face might appear to us to be less human than one who has lost both his legs and arms and had them replaced with bionic limbs. I know it's a really boring answer, but I think everyone has different boundaries.
