I think you're assuming that there won't be anything that can possibly come out of this discovery. While it could very well not lead to any substantial progress (then again, it might), that's not the point. The point of science is discovery. An end in and of itself, not a means to the end of progress. So even if not progress is made, the discovery of truth is what the goal of these scientists are all along (at least for many of them).
