Why did you use the term "transsexual" in the title? The article does not use that word.

It's the word I normally use instead of "transgender", and substituting it for the original didn't change the meaning of the title, so I figured it wouldn't be an issue.

Those two words actually mean very different things.

What's the difference?

I will explain the difference, and I will show how you changed the meaning of the title by changing that word.

"Transsexual" describes someone in the process of transitioning from one sex to another. "Transgender" more generally describes someone who does not identify as the gender they were assigned at birth.

While it might be argued that all transsexual people are necessarily transgender, you made the substitution in the other direction, going from general to specific. This changes the meaning of the title in a way that is not logically permissible.

Consider an article with the title: "An animal bit a man.". It would not be necessarily correct to rewrite this as "A dog bit a man.". However, if the original title had been "A dog bit a man", then the transformation to "An animal bit a man" would still necessarily be true.

Thanks for the explanation, it does make things a bit clearer. I don't really believe in the whole gender theory thing though, so for me only the word transsexual is worth using.

Do you believe in the right of marginalized groups to choose the words which are used describe them?

Grendel  ·  3408 days ago  ·  link  ·

I believe they have the right to use whatever words they want to describe themselves, but I have the right to not use them. Seems fair, no?
