I'm somewhat horrified to think that I'm reading a novel or opinion piece generated by algorithms.

But the algorithm was written by a human. So it's not robot-authored, so much as meta-authored by a human.

In software engineering, we have the concept of metaprogramming. Code which produces more code in a programming language. It's a great way to write many similar-but-not-identical blocks of code.

If I write an app which uses metaprogramming, no one would claim I didn't write the app, or that it's less of an app, or that I'm less of a programmer. Why is code which produces a natural language different?

What about algorithmically generated art?

What about digital art?
