Cool little robot but the experiment itself seems a bit pointless. Why train a robot when the AI to fly a plane could exist in the plane itself? In fact doesn't a plane auto-pilot already does just that?

If the point were to automate flying a plane, yes, there are surely better ways to do it, though I don't think autopilots will handle landing or taking off. The interesting thing here is training the humanoid robot, and for that piloting a plane is an interesting task and probably looks better on grant proposals than, say, teaching it to juggle.
