The first mistake you made was assuming anyone on this site wouldn't take it the wrong way. They almost always do.

That's part of the reason why I'm arguing that the mute functionality as is actively hurts actual discourse on this site.

There are always going to be those who get offended when you challenge them in that manner. Because they have the power to force you out of the conversation, you cannot challenge ideas on this site unless the person you're challenging simply has a bit of fairness to them.

Well it's to combat spammers and silence things like ahametals or whatever the handle is. At least that's what all of my reading in this "two day long flame war" has shown it to be.
