- Widely known as the “bloggers law,” the new Russian measure specifies that any site with more than 3,000 visitors daily will be considered a media outlet akin to a newspaper and be responsible for the accuracy of the information published.
Besides registering, bloggers can no longer remain anonymous online, and organizations that provide platforms for their work such as search engines, social networks and other forums must maintain computer records on Russian soil of everything posted over the previous six months.
They're also currently developing technology to scan blogs and other websites for obscene language and pictures, with varying degrees of punishment for a blogger who's found to have used curse words. Of course, prolific bloggers can't go through every post they've ever written and remove the language, but even posts from years ago are liable to get their authors punished. It's pretty obvious the government doesn't care about obscene language or security or anything, they're only interested in silencing bloggers in a manner that seems palatable to the conservative Russian population.
Nice try on the whole calling the US evil thing, Russia
