In the Future cars are supposed to drive themselves
this will be convenient for the people who live in them
program them to circle the city
so the cops can't knock on your window at 3 am
Leaving your car driving while you sleep would quickly get more expensive than a decent apartment or rental house most places. You'd easily use up a tank of gas a night. If I used a tank of gas every day right now, that'd be around $1200/month.
At $1200/month there are some cities where it already makes economic sense. Some better off folks might just have their cars circle and summon them as needed. one car families might commute to work and send the car home to their partner to use.
There's a thought. Our legal system does tend to give exception to those that are moving along. I can walk down any sidewalk at any time of night. It's when I lay down that the trouble starts. If an RV can perpetually drive, you have a life at sea, on the land. However, I expect that the first rule of self-driving cars will be that they transmit their whereabouts to keep everyone safe.
