This probably has something to do with how we cache our pages. For a number of pages we'll cache them for a minute or so if you're logged out in order to reduce the load on our servers. For some reason when you go to the page it isn't detecting your cookie and this thinking you're logged out. I'll look into this more later; thanks for the heads up!
The timing thing would explain it, it is very erratic but it happens more times than not. About 5 mins ago every time I went to the tags page it was logged in but now I go back and it's logging me out again. I'd say it happens maybe 60% of the time I don't care but I think for new users it's the kind of thing that puts you off as it confused me at first.
