Those are really fascinating. There's a rocky island in Lake Superior that we often visit, and the stone boulders that make up the beach are about the same size. It's not clear to me whether or not these boulders start off larger and shrink as they are worn round, or if they grow like pearls, adding new layers of ice. According to the linked article, it seems they are worn down.
