I don't think it's creativity, but perhaps laziness we're guilty of: by always consuming the same stuff we are sure we'lll enjoy it, just like the receptionist. Maybe we don't feel like we have the time to explore new possibilities anymore and therefore stick to what has worked in the past? Hm. Also, if what he states is true, I wonder how that affects the craving for news.
Would that mean that we are really accustomed to what is presented as news?
Or that we are sick of uniformity and try to imitate something refreshing?
