Mandela's state funeral. Come on. This looks to be squarely the fault of the person in charge of hiring. This is probably the most high-profile gig that a signer in that country has ever performed (and may ever). And the person hiring decided to go with the guy working for a 95% discount over normal rates (assuming a day = 12 hrs)???? Dude seems obviously mentally ill. How much personal responsibility he bears can be debated, but this is basically all on the administrator imo.He had been hired at a small fraction of the usual rate for the job...one clue to Mr. Jantjie’s professional status came from the fact that the going rate for a sign-language interpreter was between $125 and $164 an hour, whereas his services were just $77 a day.
Schizophrenia is fascinating. I was thinking about this guy yesterday and came to the conclusion that he was either 1) scared shitless and 'forgot' sign language, 2) didn't actually know sign language, as some people have indicated or, 3) he's signing some secret code. Now, having just watched the NY Times video, he's making the same sign over and over. I don't know what to think.
