looking over the history of various social movements in america and around the world, this appears to have been applied pretty well, even to the successful ones

This reminds me of the creation of the "American Dream" during the early part of the 20th century. People now believe that handing over 30+ years of their lives to banks is necessary to "adulthood".

Mortgages certainly have a strong effect on what chances individuals are willing to risk for their fellow citizen in the form of protest or civil disobedience.

"I just have too much to lose for your problem."
