It's entirely possible that I won't have the scientific career that I intended. It's become an extremely difficult way to make a living, and I don't see it getting better any time soon. However, it has more to do with money than politics. The politics are a symptom of a system that isn't designed to care about long term investments. For-profit industries write US legislation, not legislators, and for-profit industries aren't much concerned about the long term effects of anemic science funding.
That hurts to hear :/ What field of science are you working towards? Correct me if wrong, but I get the impression you don't intend to shrug shoulders/bite-the-bullet and just work in a for-profit organisation, which is admirable. Have you thought about backup plans/careers/fields etc? It's entirely possible that I won't have the scientific career that I intended.
