I have never liked the words "husband" and "wife" - particularly because if the word is preceded by "my," it implies ownership. If it's preceded by "the," it refers to a stereotypical "wife" or "husband." If I have to refer to the person who currently partners with me, I'll call him the spousal unit. Thank you, Coneheads. I agree with the article that when a gay man or woman, refers to their partner as "my husband" or "my wife," it becomes deliciously subversive.
