There was a book I was fascinated with when it came out in the late 1970's called Masquerade, that was a picture book riddle.

In a series of coded paintings were layers of riddles to be decoded, which would lead you to an actual physical buried treasure.

This post reminded me of it, so I looked it up on Wikipedia and found this sobering passage that resonates so much with today's right-wing conspiracy hive of lunacy:

    "...While some addicts were busy cooking the riddle, others were more single-mindedly continuing their own pursuit of the hare quite regardless of the news that it had been found. Their own theories had come to seem so convincing that no exterior evidence could refute them. These most determined of Masqueraders may grudgingly have accepted that a hare of some sort was dug up at Ampthill, but they believed there would be another hare, or a better solution, awaiting them at their favourite spot..."
