I agree that defensive driving is the way to go so long as it isn't confused with passive driving. Passivity will get you in to trouble on the road.
I've been driving for over six years and have amassed over 120,000 miles on the road, and I've never so much as received a scratch on my car. Until this fender-bender I was in, I hadn't been in an accident involving another car since I was 16. I drive about 20-30k miles a year. I was distracted by a radio program. It was stupid and I've learned my lesson.
