It's also worth noting a null hypothesis: Serfdom in Russia was abolished about the same time as slavery in the United States. Serfs could be bought and sold the same as slaves and belonged to the land owner in a similar condition. Yet Russia pursued a very different path than "American capitalism." Meanwhile, slavery was accepted in China as late as the 1940s and their economy isn't particularly capitalist either.
