Every time you leave your house you should assume someone is filming you.

Back when Chelsea was Bradley, Ms. Manning observed that security through obscurity was the thing protecting nearly everyone in the world. Yeah, the NSA is sucking up every bit of metadata for every call and text you've made but what the fuck are they going to do with it?

I spent much of the day surfing around Earthcam, in which you can see all sorts of wonderful real-time footage. It's delightful and not private and people are a few pixels tall. Yeah - when you visit a grocery store your image goes on a hard drive and sits there until it runs out of space. But nobody ever sees it. It disappears down a hole where someone can dig it out if they want to but nobody ever wants to. That's the trick - nobody ever wants to.

There's a world of difference between "I'm on a video somewhere that someone might look at if they find a reason at some point in the future if it hasn't been written over by then" and "someone is streaming my presumed-private conversations and images for money to an audience that is tuning in explicitly to watch strangers who don't know they're being watched."

That "for money" aspect is not a gray area, either. It's a hard, bright, white line. Everyone who was ever recorded on that guy's channel can sue the ever loving shit out of Amazon because Amazon is profiting off their image without a prior release. And they're doing it globally.
