I tried reading a different Russian classic a couple years ago, Crime and Punishment, and got maybe 250 pages in before I realized there was little chance I was going to enjoy it anymore than I was at that time, which was very little.

Murakami's After the Quake was another one that was just lost in translation (the sarin gas attack on Tokyo just isn't as culturally relevant here, I think), and I gave up on it halfway through. I'm a Murakami fanboy, but I found my limit. I'm also a Kundera fanboy, but his latest novel was shit and I didn't finish it (called Festival of Insignificance, I think, and the title was the only thing that was on point).
