Tesla is trying to found a revolution in cars, to be the founding company that turns electric cars into the thing that replaces gas. They are setting up the infrastructure, setting up the mechanics that build and distribute these cars. That holds the potential for massive profits in the long run. Imagine being the company that owns all/most of the gas stations in the world, and invented the gasoline engine.
