Enjoyed this piece, if nothing else because these two sentences had me laughing out loud:
In his capacity as Official Historian For White People, Tom Hanks agitated for a memorial to World War II veterans because we might "forget" what they'd done as they steadily died off. Not long before that, Tom Brokaw, the Man Who Invented World War II..

I was recently getting breakfast with a friend and the restaurant had two cashiers. We were in one line and in the other was a soldier. After we were done eating an employee of the restaurant came up to my friend and said, "the soldier said to thank you". Unbeknownst to me, my friend had bought the soldier his breakfast but asked that it be done anonymously in thanks for the soldiers service. I would have never known if the employee didn't come over to tell us. To do a kindness with anonymity is a rare thing. This sparked a conversation and my friend let me know that whenever he is driving from Fayetteville (where Ft. Bragg is) to Raleigh Durham he will see if any soldiers need a lift to the airport.

These are the types of things that speak volumes over some time spent no a jumbo screen at Yankee Stadium, imo. Though I don't have a problem with that either.

Enjoy the holiday tomorrow hubskiers and if you see a soldier or if you know one, I think it's right to give them your appreciation... maybe even buy them breakfast. My sister recently started blogging and she posted this about two veterans I know that are amazing people.
