Last week I finally booked a December trip to the Adirondacks for a week of snowshoeing. I'll have five full days plus two travel days. I still need to figure out lodging. I have a couple different ideas based on hikes I want to do (and backup plans if weather is sketchy), so I'm almost set there, too.
As I get older it's harder to leave home. The inertia of my routine is hard to overcome.
I just finished reading Into Thin Air, Jon Krakauer's book about the 1996 Mount Everest disaster. It was a good, fast read. I like hiking but think I'll steer clear of mountaineering. I plan to get up to 4500' in December, maybe over 5000' depending on my final plans. 29,000' is well beyond my interests. The hardships Everest climbers endure are unreal.
