How do you do that without destroying the beauty of the site?
There's the billion dollar question. There are a lot of really creative and bright people trying to figure it out. I think it can be done but it has to adhere to some rules: Be relevant, be quiet and be avoidable.

Be relevant: A site like Hubski shouldn't be advertising for Maxim. Probably not a good fit. But what is? That's the question that needs answering. This way the users feel the ad's are a value add and not a distraction.

Be quiet: No flash, no bling, be understated. Ad's by their very nature want to be noticed but yelling "HEY LOOK AT ME" on Hubski just isn't appropriate. The way the ad's are presented must be in cohesion with the way the site is presented.

Be Avoidable: If I'm an avid Hubskier and I want an ad free Hubski, I think I should be able to pay for a subscription that provides this to me at a reasonable cost. Say $12 a year.

Just some ideas off the top of my head. Not like I've ever considered this before ;)
