Patents exist to grant a company a temporary monopoly over a product so that a company can invest in the product for a competitive advantage. If, by giving Monsanto access to patents on genes they discover that do specific things, we inspire and keep Monsanto creating more better crops, it is entirely worth the few years we will have to deal with farms fields getting destroyed for the sake of keeping the patents. I'd rather that than not having the tech at all.
