It's probably because of the scene that it is usually associated with. Raves.
This is also where I first saw somebody playing with LED hoops and some gloving.
A YouTube video suggestion with poi popped up, which showed a very artistic way of using it. This is how I made my first sock poi :)
At raves it's usually a win-win for both sides. The tripping viewer's brain goes crazy and the (usually) stoned poi spinner is having loads of fun :)
After meeting many burners I found out that poi is much more than just a rave gimmick
