I seem to recall (and it might have been on a Hobbit video blog) someone talking about how they're very considerate of this and how they just want natural depth.
I hope that's true. I imagine the studio wouldn't have it any other way, whatever his feelings on it. Totally a novelty. Sure you could have a book that include background noises for the scene you were reading, but it would just be different, not better. Probably just a bit distracting, like 3D in films.
