According to a comment on imgur, "A group of Russian photographers climbed the Great Pyramid hiding from guards for four hours after closing time before beginning the ascent"
I'm not sure what sorts of repercussions will result from this climb, but I believe taking this image and having this memory makes the act very worthwhile for these photographers. It got me thinking:
What's the most inspirational illegal act you can think of? Or what victimless illegal act do you believe would be the most worthwhile?
My favorite illegal activities are subversive. If you're consciously doing something illegal its nice to make it known and make a statement by it, then the illegal status of whatever you're doing highlights the point you're trying to make. It raises questions like why is this illegal? What is the purpose of the law? Do I really have the elbow room in free speech I think I have? Banksy's art is like that, or the guy from that documentary "Man On Wire." Less serious, but one of my favorites is the Red Hot Chili Peppers taking a dump in a pizza box and delivering it to their record label.
I'm not really sure, but doing something like that doctor that went to North Korea to do free cataract surgeries comes to mind. As cool as that picture is and the idea of doing that, I hope that others don't try to copy the act. That said, a friend of mine did a motorcross trip through south eastern Cambodia a few years ago and apparently there are large pyramid-like ruins there. There is no road access and it's completely unprotected, though adventurous types tend to head to them so they aren't unknown. It's never been very clear to me what the history is of the place, but it was obviously very important at one time. Anyway, he and some friends climbed to the top and threw paper airplanes with wishes inside off the top. It's a romantic image, but in the end it's littering. My point is that most laws that deal with preservation aren't really about preventing individuals from doing things, but to try to deter lots of people from doing things and usually there's a pretty good reason, but of course there are exceptions.
I don't think inspirational is the right word, but these people look like they're having fun.
I'm not sure if streaking is illegal, but this seems pretty "inspired": Seriously though, When I went to Machu Picchu we had hiked for three days and got to the "entrance" of the ruins to watch the sunrise but were not allowed in to the ruins until a certain hour. I think it would be a very worthwhile victimless crime to sneak in and see the sunrise amongst the ruins with nobody else around. Or better yet, to sleep in one of the buildings overnight with just a sleeping bag, looking up at the stars. That would be pretty amazing and definitely illegal.
Oodelally, oodellaly, golly what a day! NB: spelling unsure.
