Of course we need to be certain that scientists are respecting life, but the process should be simplified. One way would be that after a certain number of applications, experiments, and reviews, you graduate to a "trusted researcher" status, are given limits for how many critters you can kill in a given time period and requirements for how that is carried out, and then you can submit a greatly simplified form and have your work reviewed on an annual basis. I would think few people would have a problem with this kind of set up.

This is a solution I've considered. I have been trained by our bioresources staff, and much of my work with animals is a variation on the same experimental model. Just removing redundancies would probably cut down the application process significantly. I would be more than willing to do a week of training to earn such a special status.
