Aside from the letter in this post: http://hubski.com/pub?id=579, I hadn't read any Vonnegut before. I intend Slaughterhouse Five to be my next read, however.

I was struck by how heavy-handed this story was. Is this his typical style? What I mean is: you get the point after a few lines, and then it's like a hammer on a nail. It's good, but it's almost good just because how relentless it is. Feels like he was pissed off after standing in line for four hours at the DMV.

Slaughterhouse Five is much different, you'll enjoy it. It tells Vonnegut's actual experience during the Dresden bombings via the use of time travel. -How could that not be cool?

there are a couple of free short stories by Vonnegut that you can get in iBooks. 2BR02 and The Big Trip Up Yonder. There might be more, but those two are short, free, bleak, and awesome.
