Nearly finished building an extra room on a small annex. Fun time working with a knowledgeable friend, we built it from the bedrock up. Scraped the earth, build foundation walls, leveled gravel, placed insulating sheets, poured concrete floor, framed it, translucent roof, windows, doors, siding largely done.

Still to do: finish siding, electrical, insulation, and paneling. It's going to be work room for our puzzle-making business.

Very satisfied.

Building on bedrock is ... just such a strange idea to me. I mean... I'm jealous! But having lived on the West Coast for most of my life, with short stints in the flood plains along the Danube and Thames river... building on anything firm is novel to me! Every surface I have ever lived on has been transient and mutable and many of them rearranged themselves under me with some regularity due to earthquakes.

"What's that crack in the living room ceiling?"

"Ground shifted in the last earthquake. The house now leans an inch to the left on the north side."

"Why is there a crack in the concrete floor of the basement?"

"Foundation is sinking."

"Don't tie those joists firmly to the house. Give them an 1/8th inch play, so when the ground moves it doesn't damage the siding..."

Etc...

And by the way congratulations on the successful puzzle business!!! I still do the Puzzle-A-Day every single day.... and usually get it... eventually...
