The title had me very confused! I forgot that someone will find a way to make a profit off anything, even something as solitary as running.

I've always run alone, and my preferred distance 7-10 km doesn't fit into most events. Is group racing a good experience?

Races do have expenses to cover, but the larger, syndicated races are price-inflated to up their margin. That said, it's easy to still get a good deal but you have to sign-up far in advance. 10km is a semi-common distance but it seems more popular in trail races than road races. Group runs, not necessarily races, are a lot of fun, at least in my experience. It's been a great way to meet people and learn more about running.

I don't run, but I do venture into the local running shops from time to time.

They are aggressively nice people. I'd absolutely join their group runs if that was my thing.
