I have never read King. When I first joined Hubski, I mentioned that I stopped reading fiction at 28 years of age. The kicker was Doctor Faustus which literally fucked me up. Earlier, I had felt intense revulsion (after being forced to read for class) The Good Soldier. All this lead me to the following conclusion: One must exercise great care as to the feeding of the mind.

I frankly never understood the point of scary stories. So have never read in that genre. The only reason I saw Shining -- with some reluctance -- was because it was SK. And even that is upsetting enough (i mean that old diseased hag in the bathroom -- awful -- did I need that image in my mind?)

-- edit --

That said, that video got me poking around for more King talks and I believe I have a sense of the phenomena finally. I find him hugely appealing as a person and a thinker. "What about hell?" Loved it.

Yeah, that was great moment and a great retelling. Gotta say, I'm glad he passed on writing the script, not his strong suit if you ask me.

I would guess the offer was perfunctory. He didn't pass the "interview" -- "I think supernatural stories are optimistic, don't you?" -- and SK apparently went out of his way to 'reflect' SK's story. (And SK would likely not suffer SK, either.) & I simply can't imagine a control freak like SK letting SK write the screen play for "his" masterpiece.

I agree with you, it is very important to consider what it is you are subjecting yourself to. Why people want to voluntarily subject themselves to gruesome images etc is beyond me.-Which is why I haven't been reading SK for years. That being said, not all SK books are like this or are even necessarily "scary". A good example is the book I referenced "Eyes of the Dragon". -He's a gifted story teller, for sure.

I am prepared to believe that.

He also appears to be one those super smart types that entirely manage to put the average person at ease. Saw another more recent clip on youtube in one of those cable tv shows -- perhaps the big O herself; just hanging around and chewing the fat and being witty. A huge social gift, in my book, and likely a sign of true intelligence. (SK' - that guy probably went around intimidating most everyone.)

SK's advice on writing. No high horse here, just tells it like it is: http://oldsite.greatwriting.co.uk/content/view/312/74
