Ever read any Niven? What's your take on his style?

I have not read Niven unfortunately. His writings tend to lean towards Sci-Fi and I tend to read more Fantasy.

I tend to read more SF than Fantasy. Best fantasy read to the uninitiated? Other than LotR.

I highly recommend Mythago Wood. mk recently read it and said he loved it.

I'm about 1/2 through Mythago Wood and I'm enjoying it. I put it down about 2 weeks ago and just haven't picked it up. I'll get back on it. Glad you posted this, it lit a fire under me.

Yeah, MW was very good. I'm not sure I'd say it's distinctly fantasy. It's really some sort of SF Fantasy mix. Just an unusual book.

ciao another book I might suggest is To Reign in Hell by Steven Brust. It's about the revolt of Satan in Heaven. The book is very bold, and I was very skeptical, but IMHO he pulls it off beautifully. It's not traditional fantasy either, but it came to mind.

Have either of you read The Once and Future King? That is another very unique fantasy themed book.

Thank you very much for those suggestions. Those seem all great.

Man, that kindle is looking sweeter every moment. Only $109. That's like R$200. Sadly, though, some of these are not available in my area. MW and TRiH both aren't. Only TOaFK is. I thought I'd get access to all them books, but Amazon has an area restriction. Pity.

Hey lessismore and caio, have either of you read Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrel? -Apologies if I've mentioned it to you before, I bring it up every time the subject of fantasy novels comes up. I absolutely loved it. check it out

I think you did, but no need to apologize. With these things we have to keep reminding people until they friggin' read the book. (I haven't read it yet, btw. Millions of college stuff to read right now, but as soon as I find the time, it's my next read.)

That seems like a fun novel. Man, I should've a kindle.

No worries, studies first. Btw, do you mind me asking what your degree is in?
caio  ·  4826 days ago  ·  link  ·
Not at all. My course includes both linguistic studies and literary studies. I think in the US - and, in fact, in some brazilian colleges - they're separate courses, but where I live, it's one with classes in both areas. I tend towards the linguistics area.

Even though I think it's fun talking about books and culture, I think it would be more fun and productive to actually learn to write books.

I'm fascinated with the amount of creative writing courses in the US. I wish we had more of those here. http://www.amazon.com/Creating-Short-Fiction-Classic-Writing...

This makes sense from what I know of you. You're definitely a creative person. I'd read a book written by caio!

One of my close friends just finished a novella. She has been working on it for years and has never shown it to any of us. Not even a peak. I am very excited to read it.

That said, I always enjoy the caio poems on Hubski. If you have any stories you've written and you're interested in some feedback, let me know. I would be happy to accommodate.
