Using Burning Man to analyze Urban Design needs.
I agree with the importance of all of these urban design concepts listed.
I am beginning pursuit of my Master of Architecture this fall, and I have around 12 ideas for a Master's thesis in my head. In case anyone doesn't know, the Master's thesis is basically two years of study culminating in an proposal, preferably one which seeks to investigate newer areas of study and consider less conventional solutions. While I don't know much about Burning Man, I do know that it seems very counter to my typical attitude and lifestyle; that is, I'm not typically environmentalist or passionate about "green" building, and I've never done drugs in my life. That said, articles like this one really pique my interest, as Burning Man seems like something you can find nowhere else. I would like to attend at some point with a sort of itinerary, some time allotted to studying, some to recreation and exploration, and some to production of things like drawings, maybe even trying to collaborate with people there. One issue with this plan is that I do not know exactly what I would be trying to solve. I don't know what thesis this could potentially lead to. However, I also feel that this uncertainty might make it a better subject to explore, as opposed to something with which I already have experience. Without knowing much about my overall thesis aim and process, does anyone, particularly someone who has been to Burning Man, think this might be a potentially good topic? Because articles like these make me think there is a lot to learn there.
As someone who was in the mapping team of MidBurn, I really enjoyed this article :) This is how our city looked like:
At peak we had 7600 citizens. There are some differences, but the general idea is the same. I do think however that we have to adapt the architecture to the ever growing numbers (last year we were 3000 at peak).
