Just to preempt any talk about how shit MP3s sound, because of all this "lost" data , realize that the data extracted by the mp3 coder is supposed to be data that is impossible for people to hear, at least at high bitrates.
The frequencies removed in mp3s are supposed to be so close to other, louder, frequencies, that they "mask" the removed frequency. Obviously it's not perfect, but I'm just pointing out that this experiment doesn't give you a fair evaluation of mp3s. I don't know if this is what the author intends, just a heads up.
