I was trying to find a great NPR broadcast I heard about a month ago about the failure of the US educational system, but I couldn't. So, I did a search and tried to find some additional sources with good information and came across this TED talk and really, really enjoyed it. Do you have any thoughts on ways to improve our educational system or on the fundamental things that are wrong with it?

I finally watched this. It makes perfect sense to me. I am sure that I would have benefited from it. Especially knowing that the next day I would be going into two-way discussions about the material. I wouldn't have wanted to leave the video without grasping a concept. My sense is that education is going to look very different 50 years from now.
It's nice to see Khan Academy just giving people these tools. I am sure that they are changing people's futures. I am going to try to turn my niece on to them. -I might brush up on some calculus too. As far as obvious flaws that I see right now, class size is the biggest problem that comes to mind. If you can't engage at some point, it's difficult to learn.

I watched the video. The idea of "flipping a classroom" -having students go home and watch the lesson (at their own pace) and then do the "homework" with the teacher in the classroom, makes sense. My wife is a doctor and while she was in medical school many of her lectures were streamed. She could fast-forward the speed, pause and rewind when needed. Why shouldn't a 5th grader have the same option? One size does NOT fit all and this new approach recognizes this and does a great deal to address it.
