FYI, I've done two things to address this:

1) A muted user cannot PM you. This should have already been the case.

2) Users that haven't yet earned a hubwheel can only send one PM every 10 minutes.

Feel free to share suggestions/ideas.

I like it! Thanks for setting up these precautions.

Perhaps a limit on the rate at which new users can post should also be implemented.

That may be something that we will should consider. But we might want to only apply it to new users with a number of people ignoring them. I'd hate to throttle good new users.

Throttling is what has made me leave a number of other forums, actually. During the "Great Cascade" of 119 days ago, I was undoubtedly excited and posting all over the place. Eventually things settled down and I don't feel as obligated to do so. Dust settling is the most important thing.

I agree that it is annoying. I would like to keep it to a minimum. I think that only throttling new users that are heavily ignored/muted, we can keep it pretty targeted. Sometimes users bring quality and quantity.

It's been a while since I signed up for my account -- is there a spam protection process there? Captcha or whatever,

mk  ·  3760 days ago  ·  link  ·

Nope.

Are you ... philosophically opposed? I find them annoying but maybe they're effective.

mk  ·  3760 days ago  ·  link  ·

I'm opposed to any unnecessary annoyance. A one-time sign up barrier isn't terrible, but we haven't needed it yet.

That said, I hate that fuzzy letter shit. I'd probably opt for an easy math problem, or something else.

So far it hasn't been an issue. When/if it does become an issue, it something worth looking into. Targeting new accounts or accounts with a lot of mutes/ignores can help cut down on the annoyances things like captcha create for non-spammy users.
