This is a good idea. Something I'd like even better, is a way to see if there are new comments on a thread I've read. For example, links I've read are dimmed, relative to unreads. If the link "un-dimmed" itself when a new comment was entered (optionally), that would be useful. I remember what I've read, but I don't remember the last comment-count of everything I've read. Hide/unhide wouldn't dp the trick for that, though.
