Melbourne (where I live) sits on a bay called Naarm (Port Phillip Bay). Ten thousand years ago the bay was not there - the island of Tasmania was connected to the Australian mainland by a long strip of land. Recently I learnt that in the mid-19th Century, the people of the Kulin Nations knew the location of key features of the terrain in the bay (hills etc), 8000 years after they were submerged. They have this whole thing called songlines, which from what I understand functions as a memory palace and a living cultural map.
